China Advances Nuclear Cooperation and Diplomacy at IAEA Summit

During the recent meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors, China reiterated its commitment to fostering nuclear cooperation that benefits the Global South. China's permanent representative to the IAEA, Li Song, emphasized the nation's dedication to leveraging its nuclear energy and technology expertise to support sustainable development and energy security.

Li highlighted that nuclear energy is a cornerstone for China’s efforts to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality, addressing climate change, and ensuring long-term energy stability. By 2026, China aims to generate an annual economic output of 400 billion yuan ($55.79 billion) from its nuclear technology application industry, underscoring the sector's strategic importance.

On environmental issues, China voiced strong support for stringent international monitoring of Japan's discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. Committing to transparency, China will continue its independent sampling and testing to ensure that the discharge remains under strict international supervision.

Addressing the Iran nuclear issue on the 10th anniversary of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Li Song called for intensified diplomatic efforts and dialogue among all parties. China supports Iran’s peaceful nuclear program and encourages cooperation with the IAEA to enhance safeguards and resolve outstanding concerns.

Furthermore, China urged the United States to re-engage in negotiations and called upon the E3 nations—France, the United Kingdom, and Germany—and the European Union to maintain constructive dialogue with Iran. Li stressed that promoting peace and avoiding provocations are essential for regional stability and global security.
