The Maldives' breathtaking landscapes are a paradise for travelers, but beneath its stunning exterior lies a pressing healthcare challenge. Thousands of residents grapple with vision impairments such as cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Access to specialized eye care is scarce, particularly on the outer islands where ophthalmologists are few.
Since 2016, the "Bright Journey" initiative has been a beacon of hope for the Maldivian people. Spearheaded by dedicated medical teams, this program offers free eye screenings and surgeries, addressing the urgent need for quality eye care. In 2020, the establishment of the China-Maldives International Ophthalmology Center marked a significant milestone. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the center enhances local eye care services and provides residents with access to advanced treatment options.
Over the past decade, seven Chinese medical teams have made a profound impact, treating over 6,000 patients and performing 700 surgeries. These efforts not only restore vision but also bring renewed hope and opportunity to countless Maldivians. The collaboration between China and the Maldives exemplifies how international partnerships can drive meaningful change and improve lives.
