China is set to significantly accelerate its green transition across all economic and social sectors, Premier Li Qiang announced during the opening meeting of the third session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Premier Li emphasized the importance of the Beautiful China Initiative, aiming to meet the growing public demand for a healthier environment. "We will enhance pollution prevention and control and ecological conservation, and continue our drive to keep the skies blue, waters clear and lands clean," he stated.
Highlighting specific actions, Li outlined plans to develop the national park-based system of protected areas and initiate major biodiversity conservation programs. He also detailed strategies to pursue a low-carbon economy, including the acceleration of green and low-carbon technologies, fostering new growth drivers like green buildings, and implementing strict regulations on energy-intensive projects.
Li further emphasized the importance of recycling waste and used materials, boosting incentives for eco-friendly consumption, and promoting green and low-carbon production and lifestyles. "We will actively and prudently work toward peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality," he added, outlining initiatives such as establishing zero-carbon industrial parks, launching carbon emissions statistics and accounting, and conducting low-carbon upgrade trials in coal-fired power plants.
China's commitment to global environmental and climate governance was also highlighted, with plans to actively engage and steer international efforts. The third session of the 14th NPC is scheduled to run from March 5 to 11.
