China is taking bold strides in environmental protection, achieving another milestone in reducing the discharge of major pollutants in 2024. Chinese Premier Li Qiang announced these advancements during a government work report at the third session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) meeting on Wednesday.
'We implemented major projects for protecting and restoring key ecosystems and realized a further reduction in the areas of both deserts and sandy lands,' Li stated. These initiatives are part of China's broader strategy to enhance energy conservation and carbon reduction across key industries.
The country has made significant progress in advancing the development and use of new energy sources, with the share of electricity generated from non-fossil fuels rising to nearly 40 percent of the total power generation. This shift underscores China's commitment to transitioning towards a more sustainable energy landscape.
In addition to these efforts, China has launched the National Voluntary Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Trading Market, leading to an increase in carbon emissions trading activity. Premier Li emphasized that this market is vital for Chinaโs journey towards a greener future.
