CPPCC’s Role in Shaping China’s Economic Future

In the landscape of China's consultative democracy, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) plays a pivotal role in shaping national policies. This year, influential members like Zhou Hanmin, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC National Committee and president of the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association, have been at the forefront of proposing initiatives aimed at enhancing China's high-level opening-up strategies.

Last year, Zhou submitted proposals focusing on establishing free trade zones, facilitating cross-border data flows, and fostering economic cooperation with least developed economies. Building on this momentum, he plans to introduce new proposals targeting the attraction of foreign investment, addressing the challenges posed by global economic uncertainties.

Wang Huning, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, highlighted the committee's effectiveness in policy advisory roles. At the opening meeting of the third session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee, Wang reported that out of 6,019 proposals submitted since the 2024 session, an impressive 99.9% have been addressed. These proposals cover a wide range of topics, including high-quality population development, private sector support, and the creation of a favorable business environment.

The CPPCC's comprehensive approach involves collaboration among various political parties, non-affiliated prominent individuals, diverse people's organizations, and representatives from all ethnic groups and societal sectors. This inclusive consultative process ensures that national policies are well-informed and reflective of diverse perspectives.

As China approaches the conclusion of its 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), the CPPCC is gearing up to contribute significantly to the formulation of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030). Wang emphasized the committee's commitment to in-depth research and strategic advice to support Chinese modernization efforts.

Looking ahead, the third session of the 14th CPPCC National Committee will culminate in early next week, with national political advisors set to deliberate on key reports and participate in discussions on major policy documents.
