China's green transition has made remarkable strides under its 14th Five-Year Plan, aligning with the ambitious \"dual carbon\" goals set to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. This comprehensive strategy has driven significant advancements in green energy, sustainable infrastructure, and low-carbon lifestyles, opening vast investment opportunities across key sectors.
By 2024, the ratio of days with good air quality in cities at or above the prefecture level reached an impressive 87.2 percent, narrowly missing the 87.5 percent target. While this marks substantial progress, continued efforts are essential to fully meet the environmental goals.
In water management, China surpassed its targets with 90.4 percent of surface water achieving or exceeding grade III quality by 2024, well above the 85 percent goal. This success highlights the effective environmental management initiatives in place.
Forest coverage has also seen significant growth, reaching 25 percent in 2024, ahead of the set targets. This increase underscores successful ecological restoration and carbon sequestration efforts.
China's clean energy sector has experienced exponential growth. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region exemplifies this progress, with the total wind power installed capacity reaching 490 million kilowatts, a 19.2 percent year-on-year increase, and solar power capacity soaring to approximately 820 million kilowatts, a 46.7 percent rise. Since 2013, wind power capacity has grown sixfold, and solar power capacity has surged more than 180 times.
Yunnan Province has also made remarkable advances in its green transition, with over 90 percent of its installed power capacity derived from clean energy sources such as hydropower, solar, and wind. The once heavily polluted Dianchi Lake in Kunming now boasts increased plant and bird species, totaling 303 and 175 respectively, and a rise in fish species to 26, demonstrating the success of environmental restoration efforts.
Green finance is accelerating, with the Agricultural Development Bank of China enhancing its funding for green projects in 2023. These investments focus on renewable energy and sustainable agriculture, supporting environmental sustainability in rural areas.
Hydrogen energy development is also progressing, with new policies introduced in 2024 to bolster the hydrogen sector, furthering China's transition to a low-carbon economy.
Plans for 2025
Looking ahead to 2025, China's green transition is set to continue offering growth potential and business opportunities. The focus will remain on reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency, supported by stricter regulations and incentives for adopting energy-saving technologies. Electric vehicle adoption is expected to increase, driven by expanded infrastructure and government policies aimed at boosting market share.
Eco-friendly industrial parks and carbon footprint reduction in urban development will be central to future plans, alongside the promotion of green technologies in construction and infrastructure. China's ongoing commitment to carbon reduction and energy efficiency will shape its green transition strategy, ensuring ecological sustainability remains a long-term priority.
Additionally, China has trained over 3,000 officials and technical personnel from more than 120 developing countries in ecological and environmental protection and addressing climate change, positioning itself as a role model in South-South cooperation.
