The Chinese Mainland Achieves Record Grain Harvest to Advance Rural Revitalization

A Bumper Harvest Fuels Rural Revitalization in the Chinese Mainland

The Chinese mainland continued its commitment to agriculture, rural areas, and farmers throughout 2024, resulting in stable and increased grain production despite the challenges posed by natural disasters such as high temperatures, droughts, extreme floods, and super typhoons.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the total grain output surpassed 706 million tonnes in 2024, marking a 1.6 percent increase over the previous year and setting a new record.

Grain planting areas expanded to over 119 million hectares, a 0.3 percent year-on-year increase, while grain output per unit area grew by 1.3 percent. These achievements highlight the effectiveness of the policies outlined in the \"No. 1 central document\" for 2025, which prioritize enhancing the supply of key agricultural products.

The per capita disposable income of rural residents reached 23,119 yuan (approximately $3,186), reflecting a 6.3 percent increase from the previous year. The growth in income underscores the economic benefits of the rural revitalization efforts.

Additionally, the expansion of soybean and oilseed cultivation was effectively consolidated, with soybean output reaching 20.65 million tonnes. This has further improved the country's self-sufficiency rate for edible vegetable oils.

Mechanization in crop cultivation and harvesting surpassed a comprehensive rate of 75 percent, and the Chinese mainland completed its annual tasks of constructing, renovating, and upgrading high-standard farmland. These infrastructure improvements play a crucial role in drought and flood prevention across various regions.

By the end of 2024, more than 1 billion mu (around 66.7 million hectares) of high-standard farmland and over 10 million kilometers of field irrigation and drainage channels were built, solidifying the foundation for continued rural revitalization.
