China’s Wang Yi Leads UN Debate on Strengthening Global Multilateralism

In a significant move towards fostering global unity, Chinese Minister for Foreign Affairs Wang Yi chaired an open debate at the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, February 18. The session, titled \"Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming, and Improving Global Governance,\" focused on the agenda item \"Maintenance of International Peace and Security.\"

Marking the eightieth anniversary of the United Nations' founding and the victory in the World Anti-Fascist War in 2025, the ministerial-level meeting under China's presidency of the Council provided a platform for Member States to reflect on the UN's history. Delegates reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism and discussed strategies to build a more just and equitable global governance system.

Wang Yi highlighted the rapid multi-polarization and economic globalization witnessed over the past eight decades. He emphasized how global collaboration has been essential in overcoming numerous challenges. \"The world has seen the rise and growing strength of the Global South, and societies have moved beyond the shadows of the Cold War and bipolar confrontation,\" Wang stated. However, he acknowledged that true global peace and common prosperity remain elusive.

\"The international community drew painful lessons from the scourge of two world wars, and the United Nations was founded,\" Wang Yi remarked during the meeting. He stressed the necessity to \"reinvigorate true multilateralism and accelerate efforts to build a more just and equitable global governance system\" amidst ongoing global crises.

Addressing the conflict in Ukraine, Wang Yi reiterated China's support for all initiatives that promote peace talks. Turning to the Middle East, he underscored the importance of upholding the two-state solution. \"Gaza and the West Bank are the homeland of the Palestinian people, not a bargaining chip in political trade-offs,\" he stated. Wang emphasized that Palestinians governing Palestine is a fundamental principle that must guide the post-conflict governance of Gaza.

Furthermore, Wang Yi emphasized the legal binding nature of UN Security Council resolutions, asserting that they must be upheld by all countries to maintain international peace and security.
