China’s Foreign Minister Advocates for True Multilateralism and Equitable Global Governance

In a compelling address at the United Nations Security Council's high-level meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the urgent need to reinvigorate true multilateralism and accelerate the creation of a more just and equitable global governance system.

Marking the upcoming 80th anniversary of the United Nations in 2025, Wang highlighted the organization's pivotal role in safeguarding human progress amid a turbulent international landscape. He stressed that the UN-centered system, founded on coordination and cooperation, remains the best solution to global challenges.

Wang outlined four key proposals to enhance global governance:

  1. Upholding Sovereign Equality: Ensuring all nations participate, make decisions, and benefit on equal terms, while respecting each country's chosen development path and non-interference in internal affairs.
  2. Upholding Fairness and Justice: Promoting justice by preventing a small group of countries from monopolizing international affairs. This includes reforming the Security Council to increase representation from developing nations, particularly African countries, addressing historical injustices.
  3. Upholding Solidarity and Coordination: Enhancing international cooperation through extensive consultation and joint contributions, replacing confrontation with coordination, and fostering win-win partnerships.
  4. Upholding an Action-Oriented Approach: Moving beyond rhetoric to implement practical solutions for global issues, from conflicts to technological challenges, ensuring UN agencies actively seek effective resolutions.

Addressing regional conflicts, Wang underscored the importance of a two-state solution in the Middle East and China's ongoing efforts to facilitate peace talks in the Ukraine crisis. He reiterated China's commitment to global governance reform through initiatives like the Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative.

As the UN approaches its next eight decades, Wang Yi reaffirmed China's dedication to practice true multilateralism, champion peace and security, and collaborate with international partners to build a more fair and equitable global governance system.
