China Calls on Japan to Uphold One-China Policy Amid Taiwan Legal Shift

China has urged Japan to honor the one-China principle and refrain from actions that could undermine cross-strait relations, following Japan’s proposed changes to family law regulations. The revision would allow residents of Taiwan and Palestine to list their origins as those regions instead of their respective sovereign states, a move Beijing called a political “trick.”

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that Taiwan has been an inseparable part of Chinese territory since ancient times, stressing that the Taiwan question is a domestic affair not subject to external interference. The remarks came in response to Japan’s Ministry of Justice proposing legal adjustments that could alter how individuals from the Taiwan region are categorized.

Guo highlighted Japan’s historical responsibility, referencing its colonial rule over the island in the early 20th century. He urged Tokyo to act prudently, abide by the spirit of bilateral agreements, and avoid sending “conflicting signals” on territorial sovereignty.

The one-China principle remains a cornerstone of Beijing’s foreign policy, with over 180 countries recognizing it diplomatically. Analysts suggest Japan’s legal tweaks may test fragile regional stability as tech and trade ties between Asian economies deepen.
