China’s Ministry of National Defense has issued a sharp rebuke against Australia over recent military maneuvers in the South China Sea, accusing Canberra of violating Chinese sovereignty and escalating regional tensions. Spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang stated that Australian claims of an 'unsafe and unprofessional' encounter with a Chinese military aircraft on February 11 were 'false narratives' designed to deflect responsibility.
"Australia’s deliberate provocations threaten peace and stability in the region," Zhang said during a press briefing, emphasizing that China’s response was a lawful defense of its territorial rights. He urged Australia to "strictly restrain its forces" and avoid acting as a proxy for external powers seeking to destabilize the area.
The comments follow heightened scrutiny of foreign military activities in the South China Sea, a strategic waterway through which over $3 trillion in annual trade passes. Analysts note the dispute reflects broader geopolitical rivalries, with China asserting its claims amid increasing Western-aligned patrols.
Zhang reiterated Beijing’s call for dialogue but warned that "provocative acts will be met with resolute countermeasures."
