In a significant move towards enhancing international collaboration, China and the United Kingdom agreed to bolster their bilateral cooperation in key areas such as energy, technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and climate change. This agreement was reached during the 10th China-UK Strategic Dialogue held in London on Thursday.
The dialogue was co-chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy. Both leaders emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in addressing global challenges.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the two nations outlined a roadmap for future exchanges, highlighting several upcoming visits. These include the UK Minister for Energy Security and Net Zero, the UK Minister for Science, Research and Innovation attending a China-UK innovation cooperation meeting, and the UK Minister for Education participating in China-UK education ministerial consultations.
Further agreements aim to accelerate the establishment of the China-UK Joint Economic and Trade Commission, alongside mechanisms for healthcare and industrial cooperation. Both parties are set to enhance collaboration in global governance, climate change, cybersecurity, financial services, and AI. A key focus was the advancement of the Paris Agreement and supporting green transitions in both countries.
Differing political systems, histories, and cultures were acknowledged by Foreign Minister Wang Yi. However, he stressed the importance of objective and rational communication based on mutual respect, reaffirming the UK as a crucial strategic partner. Wang expressed China's commitment to advancing practical cooperation across various sectors.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy highlighted the critical nature of the UK-China relationship amidst rising global challenges. He underscored the need for strengthened strategic communication to contribute to global peace and stability.
The dialogue also delved into sensitive topics such as Taiwan and Hong Kong. Wang Yi elaborated on China's positions while both sides exchanged views on the ongoing Ukraine crisis. China emphasized the importance of avoiding the spread and escalation of the conflict, advocating for continued peace talks and the establishment of a balanced, effective, and sustainable European security framework.
Additionally, discussions covered the situation in the Middle East and other global issues of mutual concern, underscoring the comprehensive nature of the China-UK partnership.
