Premier Li Qiang to Headline Asian Winter Games Closing in Harbin

Chinese Premier Li Qiang will attend the closing ceremony of the 9th Asian Winter Games in Harbin on February 14, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Thursday. The premier is also set to host a welcoming banquet and key bilateral meetings with foreign leaders attending the event, underscoring sports diplomacy's role in fostering international ties.

The Games, held in China's northeastern ice city Harbin, have brought together athletes from over 20 countries and regions since their February 7 opening. This marks the first time the event has taken place in China since 2003, aligning with the mainland's push to promote winter sports following the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Li's participation highlights the government's emphasis on leveraging global platforms for cultural exchange and dialogue. Analysts note the bilateral meetings could advance discussions on trade and climate initiatives ahead of April' G20 summit cycle.

Harbin, famed for its ice sculptures and winter tourism, has seen a 35% surge in international visitors during the Games, according to local data. The closing ceremony is expected to feature a fusion of traditional Chinese art and digital projection technology.
