Harbin Shines Again: Hosts Asian Winter Games After 29 Years

The excitement reached its peak Friday night as Harbin, northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, hosted the opening ceremony of the 9th Asian Winter Games, marking the city’s return to this prestigious event after 29 years.

Under the dazzling lights of the Harbin Ice-Snow World, the world’s largest ice-and-snow theme park, the cauldron was ignited in the shape of a blooming lilac flower. The ceremony featured a heartwarming display with children holding ice lanterns, alongside China’s first Winter Olympic champion and short track speed skater Yang Yang, men’s Winter Olympic gold medalist and freestyle skier Han Xiaopeng, Olympic race walk champion Wang Zhen, and 2014 Winter Olympic speed skating champion Zhang Hong.

The Games' flame was first lit at the scenic Sun Island area on January 20, igniting a torch relay that spanned across Harbin’s iconic landmarks. The 120 torchbearers traversed through historic sites like Harbin Central Street, boasting over a century of history, and the beautiful Songhua River, symbolizing the city's rich cultural heritage.

In a display of unity and competition, the athletes' parade commenced in alphabetical order of the participating delegations, with the host nation proudly entering last. Representing China, star speed skater Ning Zhongyan and young freeskier Liu Mengting carried the national flag, embodying the spirit and passion of the host nation.

The 9th Asian Winter Games promises exhilarating competitions and cultural exchanges, positioning Harbin once again on the global stage as a hub for winter sports and international camaraderie.
