China Expresses Regret as Panama Withdraws from Belt and Road Initiative

In a significant development, China has formally expressed its disappointment following Panama's recent decision to not renew the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Assistant Foreign Minister Zhao Zhiyuan met with Panama's ambassador, Miguel Humberto Lecaro Barcenas, to officially lodge representations against the withdrawal. Zhao highlighted the rapid and prosperous cooperation between China and Panama under the BRI framework, which has brought substantial benefits to Panama and its citizens.

The BRI, involving over 150 countries, aims to foster economic growth and infrastructure development globally. Zhao emphasized that reversing course on the BRI contradicts the interests of both the Panamanian and Chinese peoples.

China reiterated its respect for Panama's sovereignty and territorial integrity, advocating for equality, mutual respect, and reliability in international commitments. Additionally, Zhao voiced strong opposition to what he described as the United States' efforts to undermine China-Panama relations and discredit BRI cooperation through pressure tactics.

He called for Panama to resist external interference and make decisions based on the long-term bilateral relationship and the welfare of their nations. In response, Ambassador Lecaro affirmed Panama's commitment to its relationship with China and assured prompt communication with his government regarding the matter.

This development underscores the complex dynamics of international relations and the strategic importance of the BRI in fostering global partnerships.
