In a significant move to enhance regional security and economic stability, China and Thailand issued a joint statement on Saturday pledging to strengthen cooperation in combating online scam operations, human and drug trafficking, and money laundering.
Online scams have become a pervasive issue across Southeast Asia, affecting countries like Myanmar, Cambodia, and Thailand. These operations often lure individuals with false promises of high-paying jobs, only to traffic them into clandestine compounds. There, criminal networks force these individuals to execute online scams targeting victims worldwide, including within China.
Recognizing the urgency of addressing these transnational crimes, both nations emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration. They agreed to engage in further discussions aimed at establishing effective coordination mechanisms and promoting judicial cooperation among Lancang-Mekong countries.
Beyond combating crime, China and Thailand reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening military exchanges, joint training programs, defense industry collaboration, capacity building, and technology transfer. These efforts are geared towards promoting regional peace and stability.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of China-Thailand diplomatic relations. In celebration, both countries pledged to deepen cooperation in areas such as high-quality development, clean energy, the digital economy, and green growth. They also aim to boost bilateral trade by expanding market access, promoting high-quality products, and enhancing e-commerce collaboration.
Additionally, both sides highlighted the importance of connectivity in driving regional economic integration and shared development. They agreed to advance Belt and Road initiatives, including the China-Thailand railway project, to further enhance connectivity across the region.
