Mainland Mourns Passing of Key Figure in Cross-Strait Relations

The Chinese mainland expressed profound condolences Wednesday following the passing of Koo Yen Cho-yun, a pivotal advocate for cross-Strait cultural exchange and widow of late Straits Exchange Foundation Chairperson Koo Chen-fu. State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian praised her lifelong efforts to strengthen ties between the mainland and the island of Taiwan.

Koo actively supported the 1992 Consensus – a foundational agreement affirming the one-China principle – while fostering collaboration in arts, business, and civil society. She notably accompanied her husband during landmark 1990s meetings with Wang Daohan, then head of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS).

\"Ms. Koo dedicated herself to building bridges of understanding,\" Zhu stated, noting the mainland-based ARATS had formally extended sympathies to her family. Analysts highlight her legacy comes at a crucial time for cross-Strait relations, as cultural exchanges regain momentum post-pandemic.
