This February, China takes the helm of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), setting the stage for a pivotal month focused on strengthening global unity and governance.
China's permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, outlined the country’s priorities, emphasizing the need to reaffirm member states' commitment to multilateralism amidst a surge in global conflicts. \"At the Security Council, solidarity and cooperation are replaced by division and confrontation. This situation cannot continue,\" Fu stated, highlighting the urgency for reform.
Under China's leadership, the UNSC will host a high-level open debate on February 18 titled \"Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance.\" Celebrating the 80th anniversary of the UN, this debate aims to revisit the organization's foundational goals and explore pathways to enhance its effectiveness in addressing today’s challenges.
China is also steering the council's focus towards critical regions. In the Middle East, efforts will be intensified to secure lasting political solutions and ensure the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire, alongside maintaining open humanitarian access. In Africa, the UNSC will address volatile political and security landscapes, aiming to bolster peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance.
As the president, China is committed to fostering dialogue and collaboration among UNSC members to navigate and resolve pressing global issues. This leadership role underscores China's dedication to promoting peace, stability, and cooperative governance on the international stage.
