China has assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for February, vowing to prioritize strengthening global governance and advancing multilateralism amid rising geopolitical tensions. Ambassador Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the UN, outlined plans to address pressing conflicts in Gaza and Africa while promoting reforms to the international system.
'The Security Council must move beyond division and take concrete actions,' Fu stated at a press briefing, highlighting concerns over the council's recent inability to resolve major security crises. China will lead a high-level debate on February 18 titled 'Practicing Multilateralism, Reforming and Improving Global Governance,' timed to coincide with the UN's 80th anniversary this year.
Key focus areas include:
- Ensuring full implementation of Gaza ceasefire agreements
- Supporting humanitarian operations through UNRWA
- Addressing political instability in African regions through dialogue
- Advocating for increased international support for peacekeeping efforts
With the UN reporting the highest number of active conflicts since the Cold War, Fu emphasized China's commitment to amplifying Global South perspectives. The Security Council presidency rotates monthly among its 15 members, including five permanent members like China and the US.
