The Chinese Foreign Ministry has reiterated its stance that there are no winners in the ongoing trade and tariff war between the United States and China, following the U.S. announcement of a 10% additional tariff on Chinese imports.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that China firmly deplores and opposes the U.S. move and will take necessary countermeasures to defend its legitimate rights and interests.
The spokesperson emphasized that China's position remains firm and consistent, adding that the U.S.' unilateral tariff hikes severely violate World Trade Organization rules.
\"This move cannot solve the U.S.' problems at home and, more importantly, does not benefit either side, much less the world,\" the statement read.
Highlighting China's strong stance on counternarcotics, the spokesperson pointed out that fentanyl remains a significant issue for the U.S.
\"In the spirit of humanity and goodwill, China has supported the U.S.' efforts to address this issue. At the U.S.' request, China officially scheduled fentanyl-related substances as a class in 2019, becoming the first country in the world to do so,\" said the spokesperson.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry urged the U.S. to objectively and rationally address its own fentanyl problem instead of resorting to arbitrary tariff hikes.
Additional tariffs are deemed unconstructive and are expected to adversely affect future counternarcotics cooperation between the two nations. The spokesperson stressed the need for the U.S. to correct its wrongdoings, maintain positive dynamics in counternarcotics cooperation, and promote the steady and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.
