Wang Xinyu from the Chinese mainland secured her first win of the season by defeating Canada's Rebecca Marino 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 in the women's singles first round at the Singapore Tennis Open on Tuesday.
Despite Marino causing early setbacks by breaking Wang's serve in the first game and leading 2-0, Wang adjusted her strategy and tied the match 3-3 after six games. She then took control, winning three of the next four games to clinch the first set.
The second set was closely contested, with Marino edging it 7-5. Learning from the loss, Wang intensified her serves, pushing the set to 5-5. Marshalling her composure, Wang capitalized on a failed drop by Marino in the 11th game to secure a break. In the 12th game, Wang delivered a decisive ace, sealing her victory and advancing to face Maya Joint of Australia in the next round.
Earlier, Wang Xiyu was eliminated by Russia's Maria Timofeeva 6-3, 7-6(3) in the initial round. Despite qualifying as a lucky loser, Timofeeva will now compete against the United States' Ann Li in her subsequent match.
