In a bid to enhance bilateral ties, Chinese Ambassador to Britain Zheng Zeguang emphasized the importance of an 'icebreaking' spirit in fostering stronger China-UK relations during his keynote speech at the annual \"Icebreakers\" Chinese New Year Dinner.
Ambassador Zheng highlighted the increasing significance of China-UK relations in the current global landscape of changes and turbulence. \"In this new age of changes and turbulence, China-UK relations have become even more important both for the two countries and the world at large. And more than ever, we need to draw inspiration from the 'icebreaking' spirit,\" he stated.
Reflecting on recent progress, Zheng encouraged building upon the advancements in bilateral relations to maintain momentum. He emphasized the need for both nations to collaborate earnestly, particularly in areas such as new energy, artificial intelligence, science and technology, trade, education, and international and regional issues.
\"We should handle bilateral relations in the spirit of mutual respect, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit. We do have differences and sensitive issues between us, and they have to be dealt with properly,\" Zheng added.
Highlighting China’s economic resilience, the ambassador noted that despite challenges over the past year, China achieved a gross domestic product exceeding 134 trillion yuan ($18.43 trillion) with a 5 percent annual growth rate.
Zheng concluded by drawing a parallel to the historic 'Icebreaking Mission' of 1954, when British businessmen led by Jack Perry established one of the first modern trade links with China, laying the foundation for ongoing China-UK economic collaboration.
