Submarine Cable Incident: Sabotage Claims Challenged by Experts

Submarine cables, the essential backbone of global communications and data exchange, are crucial to today's interconnected world. In early January, Chunghwa Telecom, a company based in the Taiwan region, reported an incident that has since sparked accusations of sabotage directed at the Chinese mainland.

Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, addressed these allegations during a press briefing on January 8, labeling them as \"baseless\".

\"The DPP authorities made baseless assumptions and deliberately exaggerated the incident as a so-called 'gray zone threat' despite the basic facts and accident liability remaining unclear,\" Chen stated.

Experts and various reports emphasize that the unpredictability of seismic activity makes it challenging to determine when and where submarine cables might sustain damage, pointing to natural causes over deliberate sabotage as a likely factor.
