CAS Honors Pioneering Scientists with 2024 Outstanding Science & Tech Achievement Prize

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has announced the winners of the 2024 Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize, celebrating remarkable advancements in science and technology. This prestigious award recognizes two distinguished scientists and fourteen groundbreaking projects that have significantly contributed to their respective fields.

Dr. Chen Liquan from the Institute of Physics at CAS and Dr. Chen Xianhui from the University of Science and Technology of China were honored with the Individual Achievement Award. Dr. Chen Liquan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, has dedicated over four decades to lithium battery research. His pioneering work in solid-state ionics has established the foundation for China's thriving lithium battery industry, driving continuous innovation and development.

Dr. Chen Xianhui, an esteemed academician of CAS, has made significant contributions to the study of quantum materials. His research on Kagome superconductors, interface superconductivity, and magnetic topological insulators has provided a solid physical basis for technological advancements in quantum materials, fostering progress in cutting-edge scientific research.

In addition to the individual awards, four projects were recognized with the Basic Research Award for their studies on the early formation and evolution of the Milky Way and the environmental evolution of Mars. Researchers from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics and the National Astronomical Observatories of CAS achieved breakthroughs in understanding water activity on Mars, offering new insights into the planet's long-term environmental changes.

Five projects received the Technology Invention Award, including the development of large-scale compressed air energy storage systems. A team from the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of CAS unveiled advanced systems that operate without fossil fuels, setting new international performance records with their innovative designs.

The Science and Technology Breakthrough Award was bestowed upon five projects focused on mitigating farmland degradation and improving the fertility of black soils. Researchers from the Northeast Institute of Geography and Agroecology, CAS, developed China's first high-resolution map of black soil organic matter and published the nation's inaugural white paper on black soils, supporting the implementation of the national food security strategy.

Established in 2002, the Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize of CAS honors individuals and research groups for significant contributions to major scientific and technological advancements over the past five years. Nominations and reviews for the award take place biennially, highlighting the exceptional work driving progress and innovation in various scientific disciplines.
