China and Sri Lanka Strengthen Economic Ties in Beijing Summit

In a significant move to bolster economic and trade relations, Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Beijing on Thursday. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral exchanges and achieving more fruitful outcomes for both nations.

Premier Li highlighted the enduring friendship between China and Sri Lanka, emphasizing the importance of the strategic consensus reached by both heads of state. \"Over the past 68 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, our relationship has withstood international changes and maintained a steady and healthy pace of development,\" Li stated.

The discussions focused on aligning development strategies, particularly within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. Key projects such as the Colombo Port City and Hambantota Port are set to receive further support, alongside expanding cooperation in green development, the digital economy, agriculture, and maritime sectors.

China expressed its willingness to import more high-quality products from Sri Lanka and encouraged Chinese enterprises to invest in the island nation. Premier Li also urged Sri Lanka to continue optimizing its business environment to provide greater convenience and security for Chinese businesses.

Beyond economic interests, the leaders agreed to deepen cultural, tourism, youth, sports, and media exchanges. Both nations are committed to practicing true multilateralism and safeguarding common interests, reinforcing their partnership on the global stage.

Sri Lankan President Dissanayake praised China's contributions to global peace and development, expressing gratitude for China's support in Sri Lanka's national independence and economic growth. He reiterated Sri Lanka's commitment to the one-China principle and expressed eagerness to learn from China's experiences in poverty alleviation and industrial development.

The summit concluded with a mutual agreement to push for more substantive results in bilateral cooperation across various fields, aiming to write a new chapter in China-Sri Lanka relations.
