Two significant earthquakes shook the southwest region of China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Monday evening, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The first tremor, measuring 4.9 in magnitude, struck Dingri County in Xigaze at 8:57 p.m. Beijing Time. Just a minute later, a slightly stronger quake of magnitude 5.0 was recorded at 8:58 p.m., intensifying the initial shock.
Residents in the affected areas were quick to respond, with emergency services evaluating any potential damages and ensuring public safety. While initial reports do not indicate severe destruction, the sudden succession of these earthquakes has heightened alert levels and prompted a thorough assessment of infrastructure resilience in the region.
Experts suggest that the close timing of these seismic events could be indicative of underlying geological stresses in the area. Continuous monitoring by the CENC aims to provide updated information and assist in mitigating any further risks.
