Orderly Resettlement Progresses After Xizang Earthquake

In the wake of a powerful magnitude-6.8 earthquake that struck Dingri County in the Xizang Autonomous Region on Tuesday morning, resettlement efforts are advancing smoothly. By Thursday morning, 61,500 individuals had been affected by the seismic event.

To date, authorities have established 224 resettlement sites, providing shelter for 47,500 relocated residents. These sites ensure that basic living necessities are met, including access to hot meals, clean drinking water, and timely medical treatment, as highlighted during a press conference on Thursday.

With seasonal temperatures expected to drop below minus 10 degrees Celsius, distributing winter relief items has been a top priority. Efforts include the setup of 12,730 tents and the installation of 1,572 stoves to keep residents warm. Additionally, 3,020 electric blankets and 104 trucks of fuel have been allocated to support those affected by the disaster.

Hao Tao, deputy head of the regional emergency management department, emphasized the adequacy of disaster relief materials and the comprehensive support provided to residents. β€œThe supply of disaster relief materials is generally adequate, and the living needs of the residents are basically ensured,” Hao stated.

Supporting these relief operations, the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee has allocated 50 million yuan (about $6.96 million) to the region. These funds, sourced from Party fees collected from CPC members, are being promptly distributed to benefit frontline workers and those severely impacted by the earthquake.
