In a significant display of Global South unity, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu met in Abuja on Thursday to strengthen the already robust ties between China and Nigeria.
Wang Yi highlighted that the relationship between the two nations has evolved beyond bilateral cooperation, aiming to build an all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era. This vision was further solidified last September when China and Nigeria elevated their ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
\"China and Nigeria have always respected each other and treated each other as equals,\" Wang emphasized. He pointed out that both countries have continuously supported each other on core issues, achieving mutual benefits and win-win cooperation that set a benchmark in China-Africa relations.
The discussions also focused on the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), where ten partnership action plans were established. Wang Yi expressed China's readiness to deepen collaboration with Nigeria, tapping into new cooperation potentials to accelerate Nigeria's development and revitalization.
Addressing security concerns, Wang assured China’s support for Nigeria in combating terrorism and safeguarding regional peace and stability, reinforcing Nigeria's role in international affairs.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu echoed these sentiments, praising the "unbreakable" friendship between Nigeria and China. He underscored the importance of implementing the FOCAC Beijing Summit outcomes to drive Nigeria’s development and expressed hope for increased Chinese support in elevating Nigeria’s role in global and regional matters.
The meeting also included condolences from Tinubu to China over the recent earthquake in the Xizang Autonomous Region, commending China's swift disaster relief efforts. Wang Yi assured that China is confident in overcoming the natural disaster and swiftly rebuilding affected communities.
The talks concluded with Wang Yi and Nigeria's Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar jointly addressing the press, reaffirming the strong and cooperative relationship between the two nations.
