At a recent United Nations Security Council meeting on Syria, Fu Cong, China's permanent representative, urged the international community to strengthen solidarity and coordinate efforts to support Syria's path to stability and development.
Fu emphasized that Syria is currently at a critical juncture facing daunting challenges. He underscored China's support for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process in line with Council Resolution 2254, advocating for the respect of Syria's right to pursue development tailored to its national conditions and allowing the Syrian people to determine their country's future.
Addressing the postponement of the national dialogue conference scheduled for January 5, Fu called on all parties in Syria to prioritize the long-term interests of the country and its people by initiating an open and inclusive political settlement process.
He highlighted that, regardless of Syria's internal developments, the zero tolerance policy towards terrorism remains unchanged. Fu expressed concern over reports of the Syrian army granting senior military ranks to foreign terrorist fighters, including leaders of the Turkistan Islamic Party. He urged Syria to honor its counter-terrorism obligations and prevent any use of Syrian territory by terrorist forces to threaten global security.
Fu pointed out that over 16 million people in Syria are facing severe humanitarian crises, exacerbated by prolonged illegal unilateral sanctions. He called on the international community to increase assistance to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian population.
He also emphasized the importance of the United Nations playing a coordinating role in speeding up the implementation of humanitarian projects, especially to meet the immediate needs of the population during the winter. Fu stressed that all parties in Syria must abide by international humanitarian law, actively cooperate with humanitarian operations, and ensure safe and unhindered access for humanitarian personnel.
Regarding the Golan Heights, Fu stated that it is internationally recognized as occupied Syrian territory. He reiterated China's stance that Syria's sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity must be respected, and that Council resolutions pertaining to the Golan Heights should be implemented.
Fu concluded by reaffirming China's longstanding policy of friendship and cooperation with Syria, emphasizing that China has never interfered in Syria's internal affairs. He expressed China's readiness to continue collaborating with the international community to facilitate Syria's smooth transition towards peaceful development.
