In a significant move towards strengthening international partnerships, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed China’s support for Nigeria’s expanded role in both regional and global arenas. Speaking with Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Wang emphasized the long-term and strategic nature of China-Nigeria relations, highlighting a commitment to enhanced solidarity and cooperation.
Wang Yi, a key member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, underscored Nigeria’s pivotal position as a major African nation within the Global South. He noted that Nigeria plays an indispensable role in Africa’s pursuit of peace and development, making its enhanced participation crucial for regional stability.
The relationship between China and Nigeria has seen a remarkable upswing, particularly following Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s successful visit to China last year. This visit elevated bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, opening new avenues for cooperation across various sectors.
Under the guidance of both nations’ leaders, China and Nigeria have achieved substantial progress, delivering tangible benefits to their populations. Wang called for mutual support on core interests, aiming for mutually beneficial and win-win outcomes in their development trajectories.
China is poised to implement the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and advance the 10 partnership action plans in Nigeria. Aligning Belt and Road initiatives with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda, China plans to leverage its strengths in infrastructure development, expand trade and financial collaborations, and foster new investment opportunities to deepen practical ties with Nigeria.
Additionally, Wang Yi highlighted China’s appreciation for Nigeria’s support of its global initiatives, including the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative. Emphasizing the importance of climate justice, he pointed out China’s readiness to collaborate with Nigeria and other African nations to address climate change, safeguarding the development interests of the Global South.
Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Tuggar echoed these sentiments, celebrating the deep historical ties and mutual respect that underpin China-Nigeria relations. He praised China’s economic and technological advancements and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fostering friendship and cooperation for a brighter future.
Tuggar also expressed condolences over the recent earthquake in the Xizang Autonomous Region, commending China’s swift and effective disaster relief efforts.
