Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has initiated comprehensive rescue and relief operations following a devastating magnitude-6.8 earthquake that struck the Xizang Autonomous Region.
The earthquake, which hit Dingri County in Xigaze on Tuesday, resulted in 126 fatalities and left 188 individuals injured by midnight.
Upon receiving the news, Vice Premier Zhang immediately traveled to the quake site to oversee rescue efforts. He visited Changsuo Township, the hardest-hit area, where he assessed the situation at rescue centers, temporary shelters, and local hospitals.
Zhang emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and warmth of affected residents during the harsh winter months. He also highlighted the need for continuous search and rescue operations, medical treatment for the injured, and adequate heating supplies for those impacted by the earthquake.
During a meeting on subsequent rescue work, Vice Premier Zhang stressed the significance of enhancing monitoring and early warning systems for aftershocks. He also called for thorough inspections of damaged infrastructure and potential geological hazards to prevent further casualties.
Additionally, Zhang underscored the urgency of accelerating post-disaster reconstruction, aiming to provide quake-stricken residents with safe and warm housing as swiftly as possible.
