China Strengthens Ties with Africa: Foreign Minister Confirms Growing Cooperation

In a reaffirmation of China's enduring commitment to Africa, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced that China-Africa cooperation will only grow stronger, despite the evolving international landscape. Speaking during talks with his Congolese counterpart, Jean-Claude Gakosso, in Brazzaville on Tuesday, Wang emphasized the importance of Africa in China's foreign policy.

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, began his Africa tour on January 5 and recently concluded his visit to Namibia. He highlighted that Africa has consistently been the first overseas destination for the Chinese foreign minister's annual visits, underscoring China's long-standing dedication to fostering unity and cooperation with African nations.

Referring to the Republic of the Congo as a close friend, Wang recalled over 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He praised their mutual understanding and support, noting that their cooperation has yielded tangible benefits and serves as a model in China-Africa relations.

Under the strategic guidance of both nations' leaders, Wang expressed optimism about the future of bilateral relations. He also acknowledged the Republic of the Congo's role as co-chair of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), highlighting the high level of trust and partnership between the two nations. Wang is confident in Congo's ability to contribute to the implementation of FOCAC's Beijing Summit outcomes, which will further bolster China-Africa ties and enhance China's global influence.

Congolese Foreign Minister Jean-Claude Gakosso extended his gratitude to China for prioritizing Africa in its diplomatic efforts. He described the bilateral relationship as a model of international cooperation, founded on shared commitments to peace, justice, and common development.

Gakosso also highlighted President Denis Sassou Nguesso's successful visit to China in September 2024, marking a new era in bilateral ties. He reaffirmed Congo's support for China's core interests, including the one-China principle and national reunification efforts, and expressed a desire to learn from China's governance experience.

As co-chair of FOCAC, Gakosso pledged Congo's continued collaboration with China to implement the Beijing Summit's outcomes and advance China-Africa cooperation. Additionally, he conveyed his condolences to the Chinese people following the recent earthquake in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region.
