Tesla Launches Trial Production at Shanghai Energy Storage Megafactory

U.S. carmaker Tesla has kicked off trial production at its new energy storage Megafactory in Shanghai, showcasing a collaborative effort between the Chinese mainland and the United States to tackle climate challenges.

The plant focuses on manufacturing Megapacks, Tesla's advanced energy-storage batteries, with full-scale mass production anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2025, according to Tesla China’s announcement to Xinhua.

Initially, the facility boasts an annual production capacity of 10,000 units, equivalent to approximately 40 gigawatt-hours of energy storage, as reported by the company.

This marks Tesla's second plant in Shanghai, highlighting the American company's dedication to investing in the world’s second-largest economy and confidence in the Chinese mainland’s manufacturing prowess. Wu Qisheng, a researcher at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, noted that this development signifies strengthened economic ties between the two nations in the burgeoning new energy sector.

Spanning around 200,000 square meters, the new Megafactory represents a total investment of approximately 1.45 billion yuan (about $198.7 million), according to the administration of the Lin-gang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone.
