Chinese Mainland Duo Triumphs 3-0 in United Cup Opener

In an impressive start to the United Cup, Gao Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen from the Chinese mainland secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Brazil in Perth on Friday.

Gao demonstrated remarkable resilience, overcoming a one-set deficit and battling severe cramps to win her match against Beatriz Haddad Maia in a thrilling three-hour, 22-minute contest. Her victory marks the longest women's singles match in the tournament's history and her first win against a Top 50 player.

Zhang Zhizhen complemented Gao's effort with near-flawless performance, ensuring that China maintained an unassailable 2-0 lead ahead of the mixed doubles match at the RAC Arena in Western Australia.

The team's momentum comes despite a setback when Zheng Qinwen, the women's World No. 5, withdrew to rest before the Australian Open. Gao stepped up admirably, highlighting the depth and determination of the Chinese mainland's tennis squad.

Reflecting on her performance, Gao said, \"I have no idea what happened, my brain was empty and my whole body was cramping. It's a really big stage and it was a high-quality match. I just pushed myself.\"

With this strong opening, the Chinese mainland team looks poised for a deep run in the tournament, showcasing their talent and tenacity on the global stage.
