China Prepares for Over 2 Million Daily Trips During New Year Holiday

The upcoming New Year holiday in China is set to witness a remarkable surge in both inbound and outbound passenger trips. The National Immigration Administration (NIA) has forecasted an average of 2.05 million daily passenger movements, marking an 18.8% increase compared to the same period last year.

Peak travel times are expected on the evening of December 31, 2024, and on January 1, 2025. This significant rise is attributed to ongoing improvements in visa-free transit policies, the introduction of multiple-entry permits for mainland residents traveling to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Macao Special Administrative Region, along with other travel facilitation measures.

Major international airports across China are anticipated to handle a steady increase in passenger volumes. Specifically, Beijing Capital International Airport is projected to manage an average of 41,000 passenger trips daily, Shanghai Pudong International Airport 94,000, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport 43,000, and Chengdu Tianfu International Airport 16,000.

Additionally, land border ports near Hong Kong and Macao are expected to experience substantial traffic growth. For example, Gongbei Port in Zhuhai City will handle approximately 360,000 passenger trips per day, while the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is set to manage around 96,000 passenger trips daily.

To ensure smooth operations during this travel peak, the NIA has issued directives to enhance border management. Border control agencies nationwide are tasked with closely monitoring passenger flows and port operations, and they will provide real-time information to assist travelers in planning their journeys effectively.

The NIA advises all domestic and international travelers to stay informed about border port traffic conditions and to verify the validity of their travel documents before departure. In case of any difficulties at the border, travelers can reach out to the 12367 immigration service hotline or seek assistance from on-site immigration officers.
