A spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, Chen Binhua, has called on Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities to foster favorable conditions for the normalization of cross-Strait tourism rather than erecting obstacles.
Chen expressed satisfaction over the resumption of travel from mainland residents, including those from Shanghai, to Taiwan. This statement followed Shanghai's announcement at the 2024 Shanghai-Taipei City Forum about group tours for Shanghai residents to Taiwan.
The spokesperson emphasized that policies implemented by the DPP authorities are the primary cause of hurdles in cross-Strait tourism. Chen urged the removal of these barriers to enhance cross-Strait exchange and cooperation promptly.
Earlier, in March, the DPP authorities lifted a ban on group tours to the mainland but reversed this decision in June. Despite this reversal, the authorities continue to maintain a Level-Orange alert for travel to the mainland.
Chen highlighted the need for the DPP authorities to address the concerns of Taiwan's tourism industry and the people on the island by implementing concrete measures that facilitate travel to the mainland for Taiwan residents.
Regarding transportation, Chen mentioned that mainland authorities have developed plans for cross-Strait flights during the winter vacation and Spring Festival. They have instructed mainland airlines and airports to offer better and more convenient travel services.
The spokesperson assured that mainland authorities are actively responding to the needs of cross-Strait travelers, especially Taiwan residents wishing to return for family reunions or to visit relatives on the mainland. Additionally, support will be provided to airlines to increase cross-Strait flight options.
