The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines has called on the Philippines to promptly withdraw the U.S. Typhon missile system, urging the nation to adhere to its public commitments and avoid escalating tensions in the region.
This statement follows remarks by Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, who defended the deployment of the U.S. mid-range missile system, labeling it as legitimate, legal, and beyond reproach within the context of joint military exercises.
Secretary Teodoro also criticized the Communist Party of China (CPC), asserting that China has faulted the Philippines for its modest capability development while simultaneously expanding its nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities.
Responding to these comments, the Chinese Embassy dismissed Teodoro's statements as baseless and accused him of unjust accusations rooted in an ideological bias and Cold War mentality.
The embassy further highlighted that Teodoro's previous remarks have hindered military-to-military engagements between China and the Philippines, contradicting President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos's directive to de-escalate maritime tensions through dialogue.
Emphasizing the need for regional peace and prosperity, the embassy stated that the introduction of missile systems only fosters confrontation rather than cooperation. They reiterated their call for the Philippines to remove the Typhon missile system, aligning with the broader desire of regional countries and their populations for stability.
