Macao’s Happy Panda Family Strengthens Bond with Mainland

A giant panda family residing in Seac Pai Van Park in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has become a beloved symbol of joy and unity for both SAR residents and those in the mainland.

Dubbed the \"happy family,\" this cherished group consists of four members: Kai Kai, an affectionate male giant panda; Xin Xin, the nurturing female; and their adorable twin cubs, Jian Jian and Kang Kang. The names Kai Kai and Xin Xin are inspired by the Chinese word kaixin, meaning happy, reflecting the family's cheerful presence.

The twin cubs were born in June 2016, bringing immense delight to the community. Their names, Jian Jian and Kang Kang, were selected through a public naming contest, with the government choosing from 1,718 suggestions submitted by residents. These names are derived from the Chinese word jiankang, meaning healthy, symbolizing the community's wishes for the cubs' well-being.

The panda family's presence in Macao not only provides entertainment and joy but also serves as a heartfelt bridge between the SAR and the mainland, fostering a sense of shared pride and connection among residents.
