Macao Celebrates 25 Years of Prosperity Under ‘One Country, Two Systems’

As Macao's Special Administrative Region (SAR) marks the 25th anniversary of the central government's resumption of sovereignty, recent surveys highlight the region's thriving prosperity and stability under the 'One Country, Two Systems' framework.

A joint survey by CGTN and the Centre for Macau Studies, involving 1,551 residents, reveals overwhelming support for the current system. An impressive 93.9% of respondents praised the Macao SAR government's performance in recent years, while 91.9% felt their political rights and freedoms are fully protected. Additionally, 90.8% acknowledged significant improvements in social welfare.

Economic indicators further underscore Macao's growth. The region's GDP has surged 7.3 times since 1999, and in 2023 alone, trade between the Chinese mainland and Macao reached $3.84 billion, a 4.3-fold increase since the handover. Mainland investments have also been robust, totaling $14.19 billion as of October.

The survey also highlights the crucial role of mainland support in Macao's development, with 94.3% of respondents acknowledging its importance. Strong ties with the mainland have enabled Macao to establish stable economic, trade, and cultural relations with over 120 countries and regions. The region now participates in more than 190 international organizations and enjoys visa-free or visa-on-arrival privileges with 147 countries and regions.

Residents attribute Macao's success to the effective implementation of 'One Country, Two Systems,' with 92.2% affirming its success. Key factors include high autonomy for local governance, comprehensive support from the central government, and the patriotism and enterprising spirit of Macao's people. Confidence in the system remains high, with 93.9% of respondents optimistic about its future.

Looking ahead, Macao's integration into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has spurred increased tourism, more convenient exchanges, and heightened investment. A significant majority believe that China's path to modernization offers vast opportunities for Macao, with 93.8% optimistic about future prospects and confident in the central government's ability to maintain long-term prosperity and stability.
