The Three Gorges Project, the world's largest hydropower initiative, marks its 30th anniversary with remarkable achievements and impactful contributions to the Chinese mainland's development.
Since the first hydropower generator unit began operation in July 2003, the project has generated over 1.7 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity. This immense energy production is equivalent to saving 550 million tonnes of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.49 billion tonnes, according to the Ministry of Water Resources.
Beyond energy generation, the Three Gorges Project has played a crucial role in flood control, intercepting floods nearly 70 times. This has significantly contributed to high-quality economic and social development in the region.
Improving navigation on the Yangtze River is another major achievement, with a cumulative cargo throughput of over 2.1 billion tonnes and an annual average economic benefit of 34.4 billion yuan ($4.78 billion).
The project has also ensured water security by regulating and supplementing water for the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River for 2,732 days, providing over 360 billion cubic meters of water. This has been vital in maintaining drinking water supplies and supporting irrigation in these areas.
Environmental improvements in the Three Gorges Reservoir area are noteworthy. Daily sewage treatment capacity has increased by 1.58 million tonnes, and forest and grass coverage in key areas has surpassed 50 percent. These measures have enhanced soil and water conservation capabilities, fostering a healthier ecosystem.
As the Three Gorges Project celebrates three decades of operation, its comprehensive benefits underscore its pivotal role in powering progress and promoting sustainability on the Yangtze River and beyond.
