The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) garrison stationed in Macao has been a steadfast guardian of the special administrative region's prosperity and stability for the past 25 years, according to a recent statement from military spokesperson Wu Qian.
Since their deployment in 1999, following Macao’s return to the motherland from Portuguese rule, the PLA Macao Garrison has diligently fulfilled its defense responsibilities. Wu emphasized that the garrison’s ongoing commitment ensures the continued trust of Macao’s residents and the region’s sustained growth.
Over the years, the garrison has not only strengthened national sovereignty and security but also played a crucial role in fostering community ties. Regular rigorous training and joint exercises have kept the forces prepared to address potential threats effectively. This dedication has solidified the garrison’s reputation as a reliable and disciplined force among local residents.
Beyond their military duties, PLA soldiers actively engage with the community through various outreach programs. Annual open days during May Day holidays and receptions on the PLA’s founding anniversary showcase the garrison’s goodwill. Additionally, their involvement in community service initiatives, such as free blood donations and disaster relief efforts, highlights their commitment to the well-being of Macao’s people.
To date, approximately 1,000 officers and soldiers have participated in disaster relief operations. The garrison has also provided flag-raising training to over 13,000 individuals and welcomed more than 157,000 visitors to its military museum, further strengthening the bond between the PLA and the community.
Wu concluded by affirming that the PLA Macao Garrison operates with strict adherence to regulations and discipline, reinforcing its role as a trusted and essential presence in Macao.
