The Fujian aircraft carrier, the Chinese mainland’s first domestically designed and built catapult-equipped carrier, is advancing as scheduled, according to the Chinese mainland Defense Ministry. Spokesperson Wu Qian stated on Friday that the ongoing trials are a standard component of the construction process, with further trials to be conducted as construction progresses.
During a press conference, Wu addressed media questions regarding whether the Fujian had returned to port following its latest sea trial. This statement followed the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration’s announcement of traffic controls for large vessels entering the Yangtze River estuary in early December.
Having completed its first sea trials in May 2024, the Fujian marks a significant milestone in China's naval capabilities. As construction and testing continue, the Fujian is expected to enhance the operational strength and technological advancements of the Chinese mainland’s naval forces.
