China's Economic Strength Highlighted at USCBC Gala by Ambassador Xie Feng
In a compelling address at the U.S.-China Business Council (USCBC) 2024 Gala Dinner in Washington, D.C., Chinese Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, warned that underestimating China would be unwise and baseless.
Ambassador Xie emphasized that doomsaying about China lacks foundation, asserting that any attempts to contain China are destined to fail. He highlighted the Chinese economy's steady, sound, and upward trajectory, stating, \"We are fully capable of ensuring overall economic stability and forestalling risks.\"
He further elaborated on China's commitment to high-quality development, noting that the nation's progress \"is moving forward with vigor, and there is great potential for the positive momentum to last.\" Reflecting on the challenges faced, Ambassador Xie acknowledged that \"braving wind and rain\" has enabled China's economy to achieve significant advancements.
Looking ahead, Xie Feng expressed confidence in meeting this year's growth target and outlined plans for the coming year. \"Next year, we will carry out macroeconomic policies that are more proactive and impactful, and prevent and resolve risks in key areas and external shocks,\" he stated.
Ambassador Xie positioned China as a continued driving force of global growth, declaring, \"China will continue to be the top engine of global growth in the future. No force can muddy the ocean or stop its surging flow.\"
Addressing the rise of protectionism, Xie Feng reiterated China's determination to deepen comprehensive reforms and expand high-standard opening up. He emphasized the importance of advancing the sound and steady development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations and welcomed international businesses, including American ones, to partake in China's development opportunities.
Ambassador Xie warned against the weaponization of tariffs, stating that such measures would lead to isolation and missed opportunities. \"Building 'small yard, high fence' could not stifle innovation and would only constrain oneself,\" he added. He cautioned that shutting China out in the name of de-risking poses real risks to global industrial and supply chains.
Concluding his remarks, Xie Feng underscored the necessity of collaboration between China and the United States, asserting, \"Only when China and the United States work together will both our countries and the world be safer and fare better.\"
