A Decade of Transformation: South-to-North Water Diversion Enhances Jiaozuo’s Future

In central China's Henan Province, the city of Jiaozuo stands as a testament to the success of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Being the sole city where the central route traverses the downtown area, Jiaozuo has reaped significant benefits in water supply and ecological health.

Since its inception in 2014, over 430 million cubic meters of water have been channelled from the Danjiangkou Reservoir in Hubei Province to Jiaozuo. This influx has not only alleviated local water shortages but also facilitated a shift from a coal-centric economy to a more sustainable and eco-friendly model.

The project’s impact is visibly marked by the establishment of a 10-kilometer green corridor along the canal. This corridor serves as both a recreational space for residents and a vital component of the local ecosystem. Furthermore, more than 60 million cubic meters of water have been dedicated to ecological replenishment, benefiting Jiaozuo’s water systems and surrounding environments.

Marking its 10th anniversary, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project has already transferred a staggering 76.7 billion cubic meters of water. This initiative has positively impacted over 185 million people across 45 medium-sized and large cities, as stated by a spokesperson for the Ministry of Water Resources during a recent press conference.

The project has not only ensured a more reliable water supply for both residential and industrial needs but has also advanced water conservation and efficient usage in the regions receiving the diverted water.
