The 6th Hainan Island International Film Festival, a collaborative effort by China Media Group (CMG) and the People’s Government of Hainan Province, officially commenced on Friday evening in the vibrant city of Sanya, located in south China's Hainan Province.
Liu Xiaoming, deputy secretary of the Hainan Provincial Party Committee and governor of the province, along with chairman of the Organizing Committee of the festival, delivered an inspiring speech to mark the opening. Fan Yun, deputy editor-in-chief of CMG and editor-in-chief of CGTN, also addressed attendees during the ceremony.
The festival attracted a diverse group of participants, including government officials from Hainan and representatives from countries and regions such as Russia, France, Spain, Hungary, and Austria, highlighting its growing international appeal.
In his remarks, Liu emphasized China’s transformation from a major film producer to an emerging film powerhouse. He highlighted Hainan Province’s strategic focus on the film industry as a vital element in strengthening the province’s cultural identity. Liu presented the festival as a forward-thinking initiative integral to the development of Hainan's Free Trade Port, envisioning it as a central platform for artistic exchange, a significant gateway for international engagement, and a beacon of China’s cultural allure.
Liu also noted that Hainan has consistently embraced the principles of \"year-round screenings, island-wide participation, public involvement, and full industry chain coverage\" in organizing the festival. This approach has steadily enhanced the festival’s international recognition, authority, and influence. He added that this year’s edition promises a more vibrant international atmosphere, the emergence of new talents, and a richer participatory experience.
Looking ahead, Liu reaffirmed Hainan’s commitment to fostering the entire film industry chain and dedicating efforts to transform the film festival into a lasting \"super brand,\" ensuring its prominence in the global cultural landscape.
