East China’s Zhejiang Province Honors WWII Heroes with New Memorial

In a heartfelt tribute, Zhejiang Province of the Chinese mainland unveiled a memorial on Thursday to honor the brave fishermen who rescued hundreds of British prisoners of war (POWs) during the Lisbon Maru incident 82 years ago.

Located at the historic rescue site in Zhoushan, the memorial features inscriptions in both Chinese and English. One reads, \"Memorial for Dongji Fishermen's Rescue of British Prisoners of War,\" while the other states, \"Love knows no boundary; Friendship transcends time,\" accompanied by a detailed account of the heroic event.

The Lisbon Maru, a cargo vessel commandeered by the Japanese army, was transporting over 1,800 British POWs from Hong Kong to Japan when it was struck by a U.S. submarine off the Zhoushan Islands in October 1942. Despite the peril, local fishermen risked their lives, successfully rescuing more than 380 POWs from the sinking ship.

\"I hope more people learn about this chapter of history and remember those who made sacrifices for peace,\" said Wu Buwei, a descendant of one of the heroic fishermen, highlighting the enduring legacy of their courage and compassion.

Designed by the China Academy of Art, the memorial beautifully captures the historic moment, symbolizing the fishermen's selfless act. Measuring 4.5 meters in length, 1.8 meters in height, and 1.7 meters in width, the 1-tonne naval bronze structure stands as a lasting reminder of the valor displayed during those tumultuous times.

The unveiling ceremony not only commemorates the fishermen's heroism but also serves as a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship and the universal desire for peace.
