Starting December 1, 2024, products from 33 African countries will benefit from zero-tariff access to the Chinese market. This significant policy shift is set to lower costs for African exports, enhance competitiveness, and strengthen economic ties between Africa and China.
China has a history of implementing favorable market access policies for African nations, with the zero-tariff treatment dating back to 2003. This enduring partnership has been pivotal in fostering trade growth and economic development across the continent.
Lamin Dampha, the Permanent Secretary at The Gambia's Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, highlights the potential of this policy to attract more international investors to African nations, including The Gambia. \"This move is a game-changer for African economies,\" Dampha remarked.
Chen Huiyi, a Research and Coordination Analyst with Development Reimagined, adds that the policy will help elevate African products further up the global value chain, opening doors to new markets and opportunities.
As zero-tariff access becomes a reality, African exporters are poised to seize new opportunities, fostering economic growth and reinforcing the strategic partnership between Africa and China.
