Suzhou Hosts Global Youth at ‘Encounter with Chinese Civilization’ Event

Suzhou, a city renowned for its rich cultural heritage, recently played host to the fifth installment of the \"An Encounter with the Chinese Civilization\" series. Held at the iconic Lion Grove Garden, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in Jiangsu Province, the event attracted over 300 young British and French students and enthusiasts from various walks of life, both online and offline.

Organized by the World Affairs Press, this series of cultural exchange activities aims to bridge global youth by showcasing the historical and modern advancements of the region south of the Yangtze River. Participants delved into the captivating history and contemporary achievements of Suzhou, gaining insights into its remarkable journey through the ages.

Under the expert guidance of Prof. Yang Xuhui from Soochow University, attendees were virtually transported to the Lion Grove Garden via livestream. They explored the garden's pavilions and halls, learning about its transformation thanks to Bei Runsheng, the uncle of the acclaimed Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei. Bei Runsheng meticulously restored the garden, incorporating colored glass from Europe and America, creating a fusion of classical Chinese and modern architectural elements.

I.M. Pei, known for designing the Louvre's glass pyramid in Paris, once resided in the Lion Grove Garden. The serene beauty of the classical gardens greatly influenced his architectural vision, blending tradition with innovation. This event not only celebrated Suzhou's historical significance but also highlighted its role in inspiring global architectural marvels.

The Suzhou event was complemented by sub-venues in six cities across the UK and France, fostering international collaboration and cultural appreciation. By engaging young global citizens in meaningful exchanges, the event underscored the importance of understanding and preserving cultural heritage in the modern era.
