In a significant diplomatic engagement, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Susan Elliott, President and CEO of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP), to discuss the future of China-U.S. relations. Wang expressed China's optimism that the incoming U.S. administration would handle bilateral ties with care and commitment.
Wang highlighted that China’s foreign policy has consistently maintained stability and continuity, underscoring its determination and credibility on the global stage. He emphasized that China is dedicated to enhancing its relationship with the U.S. based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, regardless of changes within the U.S. administration.
Referencing remarks by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden at the 31st APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting, Wang reiterated China’s unwavering goal of a stable, healthy, and sustainable relationship with the U.S. He affirmed that China remains resolute in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and development interests while fostering traditional friendship between the Chinese and American peoples.
Wang stressed that the trajectory of China-U.S. relations largely depends on the choices made by the U.S. side. He called for the United States to engage with China constructively, promoting dialogue to enhance mutual understanding, avoid miscalculations, and advance cooperation. Wang also underscored the importance of respecting the one-China principle and the development path chosen by the Chinese people, particularly concerning the Taiwan question.
Addressing cultural and people-to-people exchanges, Wang assured that China will continue to support and facilitate interactions between the two nations, welcoming more American nationals to visit and engage with China. He highlighted that such exchanges are vital in building a foundation of trust and cooperation.
The NCAFP delegation echoed these sentiments, recognizing the critical role of effective communication and strategic dialogue in stabilizing and strengthening bilateral ties. They emphasized that a positive development in U.S.-China relations is not only beneficial for both countries but also holds significant importance for global stability and prosperity.
Committed to bridging gaps, the NCAFP pledged to continue its efforts in fostering a positive and constructive relationship between the United States and China, aiming to build common ground and enhance mutual understanding.
