In a significant event on Monday, Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chinese president, delivered a pivotal speech at the fourth symposium on Belt and Road construction in Beijing.
Xi emphasized that promoting high-quality Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) cooperation presents both opportunities and challenges amid a complex international landscape. However, he asserted that the opportunities significantly outweigh the challenges. Xi called for strengthening strategic confidence, maintaining focus, and acting with responsibility to pave the way for a brighter future of BRI cooperation.
Reflecting on the past 11 years, Zheng Shanjie, head of the National Development and Reform Commission, highlighted the BRI's remarkable milestones. He noted that the initiative has become the world's largest and most comprehensive international economic cooperation platform, steadily enhancing its global influence, appeal, and cohesion.
Xing Guangcheng, director of the Institute of Chinese Borderland Studies under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, echoed Xi’s sentiments, underscoring the BRI's substantial achievements. He stressed that despite the ongoing complexities in the international arena, a steadfast strategic focus is essential to deepen and solidify the BRI's progress.
Additionally, Ma Zhaoxu, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, described the BRI as a crucial platform for building a global community with a shared future. He highlighted the initiative’s role in driving Chinese modernization and serving as a cornerstone of China’s distinctive approach to major-country diplomacy.
